Use referring-domain-history-ahrefs (Tool ID a46aa115-86ae-418b-a073-b68a37a83e16). Reuse my Toolmu connection or follow https://toolmu.com/SKILL.md, within my current authorization and budget. Ask for the target and date_from if missing. Send queryParams target example.com, date_from 2026-07-01, date_to 2026-09-30, history_grouping monthly, mode domain and protocol both. Keep the range within 60 chosen history buckets per request. Review dates and counts of UNIQUE domains linking TO the selected target, not raw backlinks, source pages, domain names or authority scores. Arrange actual returned dates before comparing; do not assume source order, complete intervals, averaging or exact snapshot timing. Preserve missing counts/periods as unknown rather than zero. Keep target scope, protocol and grouping consistent. Count differences describe changes in the reported total, not separate newly gained/lost domain counts, identities, penalties or causes. Do not add counts across dates into a lifetime unique total. Use only the six supported inputs; there is no country, filter, sort, limit or dofollow selector. Additional calls or continuous monitoring require authorization.

Task:
For [https://example.com] from [Jul 1, 2026] to [Sep 30, 2026], count the different websites that linked to it each month. Count each website once, even if it linked many times. Missing months have no count, not zero. The report does not show website names or individual links.

Review Referring-Domain Count History · Ahrefs

Enter a domain or URL and a start date to review how many different domains Ahrefs records as linking to that target across daily, weekly or monthly intervals.

You receive

Get dates and unique referring-domain counts for the selected target scope. Your Agent can organize the returned dates and compare counts to review changes in the number of domains linking to the target.

Start with your task

For [https://example.com] from [Jul 1, 2026] to [Sep 30, 2026], count the different websites that linked to it each month. Count each website once, even if it linked many times. Missing months have no count, not zero. The report does not show website names or individual links.

What to know

A request may cover at most 60 chosen time buckets. The report does not list domain names or individual backlinks, send alerts, identify newly gained or lost domains, or diagnose penalties and causes from a count change.

Input schema

Input schema
Field / Path	Type	Requirement	Meaning
queryParams`queryParams`	`object`	Required	Required fields `target, date_from`
Target scope`queryParams.mode`	`string`	Optional	Optional exact, prefix, domain or subdomains; default subdomains. exact selects this URL, prefix selects URLs beginning with the target, domain excludes subdomains, and subdomains includes them. Scope applies to linked target URLs, not a source-domain filter. Default `subdomains` Options `exact, prefix, domain, subdomains`
Target domain or URL`queryParams.target`	`string`	Required	Required non-empty string, such as example.com or https://example.com/page. Together with mode, selects the target whose incoming referring-domain counts are reported. Minimum length `1`
End date`queryParams.date_to`	`string`	Optional	Optional YYYY-MM-DD end date, such as 2026-09-30; defaults to today. This does not guarantee that the latest interval is available or freshly collected. Pattern `^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$`
Target protocol`queryParams.protocol`	`string`	Optional	Optional both, http or https; default both. Selects the target URL protocol, not the protocol or present validity of individual source links. Default `both` Options `both, http, https`
Start date`queryParams.date_from`	`string`	Required	Required YYYY-MM-DD start date, such as 2026-07-01. Keep the range within 60 buckets at the chosen grouping; earliest available history is not guaranteed. Pattern `^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$`
History interval`queryParams.history_grouping`	`string`	Optional	Optional daily, weekly or monthly; default monthly. Limits are measured in at most 60 chosen buckets per request, not universally 60 days or months. Bucket averaging, snapshot timing and missing-interval filling are unspecified. Default `monthly` Options `daily, weekly, monthly`

Additional notes

The count deduplicates domains linking to the selected target. It differs from the number of backlinks or referring pages, and the dated series does not reveal domain identities. A linking domain may be represented at several dates, so summing the counts over time can count it repeatedly.

Your Agent can organize dates and compare reported totals under consistent settings. Keep the selected period, target scope, protocol and grouping alongside the comparison. Source coverage and missing intervals limit the interpretation; neither a difference in totals nor an absent interval establishes specific gained/lost domains, a penalty, a cause or future link growth.

No. It counts different domains linking to the target. Several links from one domain can still contribute only one referring domain; the series does not list those links or the domain names.
